Instructional Systems

Instructional Systems (IS), formerly the Manual-Making Team, is HuskyADAPT’s newest branch. We want to teach more people how to adapt toys, not just the people who attend our workshops. IS creates clear, reusable, and accessible instructional materials that empower community members around the world to adapt toys for children with disabilities.

Why Instructional Systems?

Existing toy adaptation information can be hard to find, inaccessible, and tricky to understand. Instructional Systems aims to make toy adaptation information easier to find, use, and understand.

Our members write and refine step-by-step toy adaptation guides, learn how parents, caregivers, educators, and clinicians look for adaptation resources, and design accessible systems for authoring and sharing manuals at scale.

Our year: In fall, we connect with mentors, learn user-centered writing, and make manuals. In winter, we verify accuracy and translations and design systems for sharing information. In spring, we develop K-12 curriculum and share our content and learnings.

Join IS if you’re interested in: UX and UI design, service design, technical writing, information access, community-rooted work, education, toy adaptation, digital accessibility, design thinking, user research, and grammar and style.

Instructional Systems is led by co-chairs Jordan Cheung and Spencer Hensley. Questions? Email us at adaptuw@uw.edu.
